FAQS ABOUT US NEUROPATHY

Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy is the term for multiple conditions and symptoms that are the result of damage to your body’s peripheral nerves outside of the spinal cord. The central nervous system (CNS) consists of your brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of nerves which carry impulses sent from the CNS. These peripheral nerves carry the impulse signals to your arms, hands, legs, feet, joints, mouth, eyes, ears, nose, skin and all areas outside the CNS.

Peripheral Neuropathy is the term that describes the condition that occurs when the messages from your brain and spinal cord can’t connect well to your muscles, skin and other areas of your body outside of the CNS.

When this problem arises, you may experience numbness, burning, tingling, pain and possible loss of function of the above-mentioned areas. The peripheral sensory nerves can be affected which would cause pain, tingling, burning or numbness, while issues with peripheral motor nerves can cause difficulty walking, lifting items, or moving the arms and legs.

Diminished function of your Autonomic Nervous System leads to problems with involuntary functions such as breathing, blood pressure and sweating. Mononeuropathy (one nerve affected) is in most cases the result of traumatic injury, inflammation or local compression such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Bell’s Palsy.

The majority of people suffer from Polyneuropathy (multiple nerves affected at the same time) which most commonly is Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy. This causes symptoms such as limb pain, tingling, burning, numbness and even phantom limb sensation.

The leading cause of Peripheral Neuropathy is Diabetes and over 70% of Diabetic patients suffer from these type of symptoms. Chemotherapy, traumatic injury, exposure to toxins and alcoholism are also causes of Peripheral Neuropathy. When a specific cause cannot be determined, it is termed “idiopathic Neuropathy”.
